Ladybug Haven: How Biochar Helped One Greenhouse Thrive

The problem - the ladybugs didn't stick around

Allan Baker, a dedicated gardener, is always seeking ways to improve his yields and cultivate a thriving ecosystem in his greenhouse. One persistent challenge he faced was maintaining a consistent population of beneficial insects, particularly ladybugs, which he uses for pest control.  He often purchased ladybugs to combat aphids and other pests, but they would frequently depart during the hottest parts of the day, seeking refuge elsewhere.  Then, Allan discovered a simple yet effective solution: biochar.

 

Experimenting with biochar

He began experimenting with coarse biochar in his raised beds, applying a one-inch layer atop the soil. The results were remarkable, benefiting not only his plants but also the ladybug population. Allan observed the ladybugs utilizing the biochar as a haven during the peak heat of the day. He believes the biochar creates an ideal microclimate—shady, cool, and protected. It's as if the ladybugs have their own miniature biochar apartments!

 

More ladybugs stick around!

This discovery proved to be a turning point for Allan's greenhouse. Before incorporating biochar, his ladybugs would vanish when the temperature climbed, leaving his plants susceptible to pests.  Now, they remain, contentedly feeding on aphids and contributing to the overall health of his plants.

 

No introduction of other pests like with straw or wood chips

Another advantage Allan has observed with biochar is the minimized risk of introducing unwanted pests.  In previous attempts to create similar habitats using uncharred biomass (such as straw or wood chips), he occasionally inadvertently brought in other insects or even slugs. With biochar, however, this issue has not arisen. The charring process eliminates potential pest problems, establishing biochar as a safe and effective method for creating beneficial insect habitats.

For Allan, incorporating biochar has been a straightforward yet remarkably successful approach to enhancing his greenhouse ecosystem. It has aided in retaining beneficial insects, diminishing pest pressure, and ultimately fostering healthier, more productive plants.
